One of the greatest gifts nurses, physicians and all direct care providers can share with their patients, colleagues, and those they supervise is a sense of their own inner strength and peace. However, they cannot share what they do not have.

By discussing approaches to acute and chronic secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others), Drs. Wicks and Donnelly (co-authors of the second edition of Overcoming Secondary Stress in Medical and Nursing Practice offer insights into how to remain passionate in the field of modern health care without losing one’s own inner fire in the process. It is their thesis that it is not the amount of “darkness” in the world, the workplace, or even themselves that matters…it is how to mentally stand in that darkness (a healthy perspective) that makes a difference.

Topics in this webinar will include: developing a self-care protocol; maintaining a healthy sense of perspective when faced with the dangers of acute and chronic secondary stress; guilt and caregiving during pandemics; appreciating the elements within a circle of supportive and challenging friends that needed to maintain balance today; approaches to fearless self-awareness and post traumatic growth; recognizing inner darkness; and the necessity of at least a sense of informal “mindfulness” amidst the practice and stresses endemic to contemporary health care.
